PAZYRYK

Earliest Rug Discovered

The earliest rug discovered in its entirely dates back to the 5th century B.C. and that was before humans moved from the ice mountains to the south and Persia. The rug was discovered frozen in 1949 by a Russian archaeologist, RUDENKO, in a Scythian site in the ALTAY Mountains of Siberia near the northeast of Mongolia, in the PAZYRK valley.

The dimensions of PAZYRYK were 6’x6’, it was woven with symmetrical knots of about 200-225 knots per square inch.

The origin of PAZYRYK is uncertain; however, it has Persian achaemenian (a Persian dynasty that ruled from 550 to 331 B.C.) motifs.

Some scholars believe that because of its achaemenian motifs, it was made in Persia and imported. Others disagree and believe it was made near the area where it was found. Currently, the PAZYRYH rug is in the HERMITAGE museum in LENINGRAD, RUSSIA.

Information about Rugs

Hand woven Oriental rugs are made in different parts of Asia, including Iran, India, Pakistan, China, Turkey, Nepal, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. Ninety percent of hand made Oriental rugs is woven by villagers, and usually all family members or the women of the family are weavers and their home is their place of work. More variety of styles is woven by villagers than by any other weaving category.

Most rugs are woven from sheep’s wool and have long processes even before the weaving is begun. The process begins by shearing only the fi nest sheep’s wool and then it is washed free of lanolin. It is then “carded” to straighten the fibers, and spun by hand. Next, it is dyed in giant boiling vats as many as ten times by master dyers, and then hung to dry. Loom is the main tool used for rug weaving; loom is a frame which holds the rug together while it is being woven.

Each hand knotted rug has a foundation that is usually made from cotton and comprised of two parts. The fi rst part consists of vertical strands of fiber which stretch from the top to the bottom of the rug and knots are tied to them and fi xed on the loom before weaving. The second part consists of horizontal strands of fiber that are woven through the vertical strands; they are added to and in between rows of knots to secure the knots in place. An average weaver can tie between ten to twelve thousand knots a day. The total process time for a 9’x12’ rug with an average of 200 knots per square inch takes around one year to complete.
